AMREF – African Medical and Research Foundation inc. Flying Doctors Service
Salzburg AMREF Marathon is more than a running event in one of the most beautiful cities of the world. It is also a gesture of cultural exchange and helpfulness. Each participant supports the charity organisation AMREF – „African Medical and Research Foundation inc. Flying Doctors Service“. AMREFs goal is to build up a basic health service with skilled native employees for all people all over the country. Every year 30 million people benefit from one of the AMREFs programs. The donation of the Salzburg AMREF Marathon goes to a health project in Southern Sudan.
The few hospitals in Southern Sudan are dispersed in the whole country. Only one medical has to help 100.000 people. Often the medicals have to work without medical equipment or even without running water. The Southern Sudan also has the highest mortality rate of parturient mothers. Two of hundred women die during or after their pregnancy. One of four children die even before they arrive at the age of five.
With their participation the runners of the Salzburg AMREF Marathon support AMREF to instruct local health personnel like midwives or clinical officers. AMREF takes care of the hospitals in Southern Sudan too. The organizer of the Salzburg AMREF Marathon was able to assign 21.500 Euro to the international Organization last year.
